“The creation of an original work
begins with an overwhelming
inspiration. In the instance of
Ochre & Dust it was my first trip
to the central desert of Australia.
The people of the desert, the
songs, the light, the night sky and
the awesome landscape made a
huge impact on me.
The next time I had a similar
sensation was a summer’s night in
Detroit. Tyree Guyton had created
The Heidelberg Project, an urban
fantasyland of detritus: chaotic,
confronting and wondrous. Walking
down this street I knew I had to
work with this artist. I invited
Tyree to Sydney and created
Singing for that Country as an
urban poem for The Art and About
Festival.”
